Default Hummus??

I discovered the deliciousness of hummus super bowl weekend of last year (no, we didn't watch the super bowl ) and I didn't have any sort of reaction. The second time I ate it, a couple of months later, my tongue felt funny. Hard to describe. Third time, same thing. Fourth and last time, my airway felt constricted! I sounded like I was whistling through my throat as I was breathing That was when it clicked that I shouldn't eat it anymore. It's been a long time, and I miss it, dang it, but I'm scared to try it! I'm wondering which ingredient is the likely culprit. Tahini, hopefully. I could get by without that.

Anyone ever had this issue with hummus? I've never had an allergic reaction to anything in my life. I didn't get hives or anything. Does this even sound like an allergic reaction?

It does sound like an allergic reaction. I'd be afraid to have you try a plain chickpea to test the tahini theory though.

Or try making the black bean variety? It could be the tahini (sesame seed) or the chick pea (which is a cousin of peanuts). I love hummus, so do all of our kids, but I worry about Ben and his nut allergies.

Have you eaten sesame seeds in Asian food or on a bun or bagel without issues?

sounds like the tahini, but I agree to try hummus without it. I buy non tahini hummus at trader joes.

Yeah, I've since had sesame seeds without issue.

When I try it (sans tahini) should I just keep Benadryl close by?

Yeah, tahini is just sesame seed butter so if you'd had the seeds lately, I'd guess it's the chick peas. :/

And yeah, Benadryl is a good idea.

Yep, I'd say a chickpea allergy, too. TBH, I wouldn't try it even with benedryl since the 4th time you had airway constriction. If you really feel like you want to try, I would only do so while near an ER.

I've had a white bean hummus that was very tasty. Maybe that would be an option for you.

I think the only time I'd never had chickpeas was in the hummus, so that would make sense, though I know allergies can develop even with food you've consumed for a long time. Ugh

Thank you for the recipes, Heather! I pinned them both.

I finally worked up the courage () to try white bean hummus. It's been a couple of hours and I'm good! It still had the tahini, so I was nervous. It seems to be the chickpeas, then.

I'm glad you liked it and figured out the problem. I'd be sad if I could never eat hummus!

You can always try out an edaname (sp?) hummus or a white bean one and don't use tahini in it. IMO they taste better and have a better texture.
