Wait, why did they bury the cat? I'm confused.

The cat was hit by a car and declared dead by a vet.

Seems reasonable to bury it at that point...

I never got the part about being declared dead by a vet. I think someone told him the cat got hit, he found it, it was stiff and cold, and he buried it. Where are you getting that bit about the vet?

I didn't see the bit about the vet either. Not that I blame the guy.

There was no vet... he was found in the street and the neighbor buried the cat for him, since he was "too distraught" to do it himself. Supposedly the cat was "stiff in the road in a pool of blood", so they never took him to the vet.

I am sad that the poor cat was in the ground while it struggled to live and glad he's ok. I cannot hear the video, the sound is messed up on my laptop, but I would assume the SPCA has now paid quite a bit towards this animal's care on what amounts to, like it or not, negligence on the part of the owner. The cat should have not been out in the street... and yes, I have some cats in and some out, I know it happens. If it happens, it's my responsibility to take care of the consequences, period. I would not expect the SPCA to fix my cat up and then give it back, either. Someone has shown some lack of judgement somewhere, though, as the poor cat was obviously buried alive and very injured.

The person speaking in the video in the link says the car was breathing and they should have brought it to a vet. That's why I was confused.

When the story was first released it showed up in my FB feed. The link said he was declared dead by tampa vets. There are a few sites when I google that say the same thing, but no reputable news source that I'm seeing.

This is the article I read when he was first found

Here's the deal: this was not intentional cruelty. Humans used to be buried dead sometimes, too. Breathing can be so shallow as to be nearly undectable. If the cat was stiff, clearly hit by a car and not perceptibly breathing, I can see declaring it dead yourself and not taking it to the vet. We have chickens, and we loose them sometimes. I've never taken one to the vet to confirm death. If we find them dead, we bury them.

I would say it would be perfectly reasonable for the SPCA to say "Reimburse us for the vet care (or some portion) and we'd be happy to return your cat".

Yes I agree with this, we've had multiple cats get hit and they were very stiff and very dead. Looking at the owner's other animals you can clearly see this wasn't done on purpose.

I am going to guess some of those stories added the "declared dead by a vet" part to sensationalize the whole "zombie" part. It was made this story so famous, after all, bless him!

I never said it was intentional, I don't think it was at all. Still, there is the matter of the whole bill for the surgeries the poor cat had to endure and I am sure that has a lot to do with why the SPCA is refusing to return the cat. Also, things like IF (I am not saying this is the case here, as I've not seen it discussed) the cat never saw a vet, never had vaccines, etc may also play into the equation. Granted, there are places out in the country it is normal to have pets who never see a vet and live long, healthy lives, but I got the feeling this is a city cat and there are local regulations mandating certain things with pet ownership.
