Keep us posted on how it works for you! I wasn't able to shower yesterday or today (until around 5pm) and I didn't start getting stinky until mid afternoon today!

The crystal are aluminum salts FYI.

I make my own -- it is like a paste a apply once a day, even hot days like today only need it once!

Coconut oil, about half a cup warmed to liquid
Natural non-aluminum baking soda, enough to make a thin paste with the oil
2-3 Tbsp zinc oxide powder
5-6 drops lavendar oil
10-12 drops tea tree oil
I like to add clove oil for scent because I love the smell! But add any essential oil you like if you want scented.

Let a small pea size amount elt onto your finger tips and rub into pits every morning.

The crystal deodorants are alums, which are not as readily absorbed (nor as harmful) as aluminum. Read here: http://www.planetnatural.com/site/xd...deodorant.html

For what it's worth, I have now tried both Crystal in rock form and Naturally Fresh in roll-on form. LOVE both. No stink, even while working out. Yesterday I was drenched with sweat during my workout, lifted my arms and sniffed - nothing! No smell! I was SHOCKED! The rock was harder to figure out - have to get it moist but not soaking wet to get on. I got it too wet the first day I tried it and didn't get enough on, so got stinky during my workout. Anyway, I'm sold on crystal deodorants now. Thanks, ladies, for helping me find something that works for me!

Thanks for the recipe - I am going to make some this week because I have developed the most horrific rash from my normal deodorant/antiperspirant. It is so stinking hot and humid here and the baby powder corn starch just isn't cutting it anymore.

I am having a hard time finding the zinc oxide powder - none of the pharmacies keep it in stock and need to order it... I've got some coming in tomorrow I hope!

Can you substitute another oil for the coconut?

I get my zinc powder from a small nutrition / he4rb shop locally. It is in the glass jars like the dried herbs that you buy bulk style by the ounce. I've seen it available on etsy as well.

Coconut oil is used because it is solid until &0-something degrees = less messy! LOL I suppose you could use another natural food grade oil for your base. If you do I'd start out with less oil & more baking soda to create a thicker paste.

I always applied straight out of the shower while my armpits were still wet (otherwise you have to wet the crystal itself). You apply a thin coat to the entire pit and it works by keeping bacteria from growing (which causes odor). It doesn't help with perspiration, because it's healthy to sweat.

The ones with baking soda help to neutralize and absorb excess perspiration, so it does help you feel dryer (me, at least) without stopping perspiration, like a commercial antiperspirant does.

The recipe I use to make mine is
5 tbsp coconut oil
1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup cornstarch.

I just mix it all together till smooth. You can warm the oil to liquefy and make mixing easier. You can also add EO or FO to it, to make it smell nice or for the properties of that EO (tea tree oil or lavender can offer antibacterial properties, for example). I play with it to get the right consistency, so I can't promise that's the right amount. I start with that, and sometimes add more cornstarch to thicken it.

I store mine in a small lidded bowl and apply with my fingers.
I use a similar recipe and add a couple of drops of lemongrass oil for yummy smelling pits. I have super sensitive skin and this is one of the few deodorants that does not irritate me and pretty much the only one that actually WORKS. Plus it's cheap!

I've been using Green Body Basics deodorant for more then a month with no stinkies. Before that I could never find a natural deodorant that worked for more then a few weeks. I would like to try the homemade deodorant though, since I love making my own stuff to save money where I can. Thanks for the recipes!

Thank you for this, I will be trying it out soon!
My mate has this horrible rash under his arm pit, and he is in sales, so he cant be smelling like a human, cause that would just be offensive, LOL.
Im going to have him test it out!

Something else you could try (works well for me and I am a sweaty betty!) is just wiping a slice of lemon under your pits. It lasts me all day where a lot of natural deodorants don't. Crystals didn't work well for me at all and I found that after a couple of months the crystals themselves started to stink of BO. The only other thing that lasts me all day is the Relax deodorant which has baking soda I think.

There's another thread here about this. I think it might just be titled, deodorant. I have always stunk. No other polite way to put it. I sweat a lot and it smells really bad. I have tried everything. Even after washing my pits several times, they would still smell like BO. Someone said to use rubbing alcohol. After 45 years of stinking, I finally don't stink anymore. I found a bottle of rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle at Walgreens. After my shower, I spray it on and let it dry. Then, I put one light swipe of Arrid Xtra Dry on. I rarely stink anymore. I need that tiny bit of deodorant to keep the sweating down, but I notice if I put on more than that, the stink comes back. This has made a big change in my life. I was always so nervous about being around people in the summer because I knew I smelled bad. I don't have to worry about it anymore.

Yeah I retract this.. LOL.. maybe its mmy age.. or my body reacting to the heat/humidity here.. but now for the summer I went old school and am using Secret Clinical Strength LOL. I'll likely go back to natural during t he winter.

You might like Odaban. Check it out.

and I'm glad you found a solution!!

LE you just must produce a lot of bacteria an the alcohol is killing the bacteria which is making you less stinky. Does it hurt after you shave?? I'm curious. Im not really stinky except when I work out, but I'd consier trying it anyway!

It's stings for a few seconds, but it's not a big deal. I was worried about that too.
