Default Talk to me about St Johns Wort

I have mild symptoms of anxiety and depression. I have the willpower to be successful in one area and I've chosen my job. Even there I'm running out of leave time. But that focus leaves my relationships, house maintenance, academics, and even financial management in pretty bad shape. We don't have any children.

I'm taking metformin for hormone correction. Would SJW interrupt that?
And in my current state is St Johns Wort a good choice for me?

At johns wort interferes with birth control. If talk to you pharmacist before starting.

I am not on birth control. Anyone know more about St Johns Wort?

This is a good link to the NCCAM write up on it.

It's been studied in two major trials in the U.S. and both found that it's not anymore effective than either a placebo or a standard antidepressant. But everyone responds to supplements differently. It would certainly have less side effects than a synthetic drug. Most commonly reported side effects are upset stomach and light sensitivity. It's good to note also that it's a stimulant. It does leave some people feeling wired or wound up, so it's not also the best option for people who are also anxious or tense.

As pp pointed out, SJW does interfere with some medications like birth control because of the pathway through which the body metabolizes it. If it's something you'd like to try, I would definitely just check in with a doctor or pharmacist first.

I actually have had better luck with 5-HTP and some amino acids (tyrosine, tryptophan and DLPA). I can fall more into the moderate depression range, though, so 5-HTP alone may help you. SJW did nothing for me, unfortunately.

Or DLPA alone... or even Sam-e.

DD2 was put on Kavinace (amino acid supplement) to help with her anxiety and sleep issues.
I've had better luck with Valerian than SJW...though I can't take it anymore due to thyroid issues.
