Default Western Michigan people (Grand Rapids region?)

Hi. I am looking at a relocation. If I worked in Muskegon where would I want to live? I have never lived anywhere near there, so I only know places from maps. Does anyone want to play where do I want to live?

I live on the east side of Michigan, but have family in Muskegon. From what I understand, there are some beautiful places right there in Muskegon, but some areas to stay away from too.

FYI - Muskegon Heights is the first school district to be dismantled by the state of MI and turned over to charter schools...it isn't going well, so if you live there, I'd avoid that lol

I am just north of Grand Rapids, but I know nothing about Muskegon, besides performing in there schools a long time ago.

What kind of job takes you to Muskegon??

I live right by Suzanne. I love it here, and I'm sure there are some fabulous parts of Muskegon, but maybe rent first to feel out the area? It's not a glamorous city in and of itself, but the surrounding area really is beautiful.

I'm not sure where you live now, but something to consider here is the commute to work. The winters can be notsofun for driving, so you don't want to be super far from work.

Oh, we will definitely be renting first. We're in northern MI right now so the snow won't be anything new. It will just be odd to go south and not see a reduction in snow, lol. How does the plowing seem to go where you guys are familiar with? Do they keep it pretty clear? What about rural roads? I'd always like a shorter commute, but I need to pick an area that's right for the kids. I can't be changing them in schools too often.

I have no real idea of what kind of reputation Muskegon has, but I haven't heard too much good yet. I work in accounting and finance.

Yeah, it doesn't have the best reputation.. But I know there are some really good state parks. I'm sorry, I don't know much about any specifics.

I can tell you a lot about the Grand Rapids area lol. But... Maybe too far of a commute for you.
Coopersville isn't bad if you don't mind a commute. It's a small town with decent people. I know several people who live there and it's a pretty decent place.

That is one of the areas I was considering. Norton Shores, Grand Haven, Coopersville, even Allendale (though that is pushing the commute).

Grand Haven is beautiful. I have friends in Muskegon and they seem to like it. I lived in Grand Rapids/Kentwood for four years in college. My sister lives in Rockford and works in Grand Rapids. Commute is definitely something to consider.

I have talked to people who live in Grand Haven, it is beautiful but you have to deal with a lot of tourists for 3/4 of the year, something to consider.

Which 3/4's? Is winter the slower season?

I like having the opportunity to relocate but choosing is hard. Is the west coast of MI better for me or the east coast? Strangely enough those are the places with the best job prospects right now. On Lake Michigan or on Lake Huron in the thumb? I'm about ready to flip a coin, throw a dart, or say forget it and just move to a metro area hoping I get a job. How do I make these choices?

Winter is the much slower season. The beach in Grand Haven is pretty busy most of the year. There is a beautiful lighthouse. And downtown can get pretty touristy. DH and I spent a lot of time there when in college. In fact, we got engaged at the Grand Haven lighthouse. It was the dead of winter (NYE 1999) and there wasn't hardly a soul in town.
~~~~~~~
Job market in Michigan is pretty crappy, as you know. I wouldn't move without having a job. I live more toward the thumb (in Saginaw), less touristy, not as beautiful as the west side.
Sorry, I'm not really going to move without a job, it's just frustration with the process coming through. I'm lucky to have choices and have two different sides of the state appear to want me. Thank you everyone for giving their impressions of areas.
Winter would be the slower season, since GH is more of a beach town.
I love the west side of the state honestly, it's pretty great, Grand Rapids was just voted best places to raise a family, there are great school systems pretty much anywhere but right in GR, all of the outskirts are pretty good and some are great, so, that is my 2 cents
