Default Houston Area Questions

DH got a couple of job offers and one is in Houston. I can see house prices, school district info, and real estate tax info etc online but I have more questions just to see how far our dollars will stretch there. We're tentatively looking in The Woodlands and Spring area.

How much does car insurance run for 2 adults with decent (not perfect) driving records and two vehicles?

electricity summer/winter?

Water? (This might sound dumb, but we got majorly surprised by our water bill in our current house. It can be $200/mo in the summer. $120/mo in winter)

Anything else I need to think about?? I'm guessing gasoline is comparable with the nations average? It's around $2.35 up here right now.

What?????

Sadness.

Did you try the comparison cost if living calculators?
I bet for water you would have to call the township, it varies so much from one place to another, our water bill in Sand Lake for only half the year is more than what we paid in Byron center for year round.

I'm still in shock though. I though he was still in school?

You can get a lot for your money down there. I would also look in the Katy area.

Electricity is much higher in the summer than winter, but it depends on where you keep your house at. Water also is higher in the summer due to watering the lawn.

Yeah, he's getting head hunted out early at higher than the starting salary we were realistically expecting after graduation. The other place that wants him is in the UP but he would transfer out within a year, most likely to Vancouver. That's a way more desirable job for him, but he would have a lot of required travel and possible future transfers which means uprooting again.

I'm a few hours south of Houston, but I can give you a general run down of my expenses. I'm sure they are all about the same.

When Thomas and I were on joint accounts, we had two vehicles full insured with both of us as drivers and it would run us anywhere from $160-180/mo.

Summers are torturous and it's nothing for light bills to be over $200 from May-September, but our winters are measly compared to Michigan's. Some months our electricity is $70-80 since it rarely gets cold enough for me to utilize the heater.

As for water, I always pay around $85/mo, but that's just for 1 adult and two kids who shower frequently.

I'd say $200 is average year round for gas+electric here. Though in the winter it can be above 300 combined.

Good to know, Brandi, thanks. So far EVERYTHING is cheaper in TX lol. I was hearing that gasoline is only $1.80 down there?? WTC?

It's currently $1.98/gallon in my town, but it's been 1.80 recently. I'm 1.5 hours from where you are looking. What Brandi said sounds about right. Summer electricity is horrible but not worse than Michigan winters ( just opposite!). We rarely use the heater in winter. Our current water bill ( just opened it) is $108 but we have a pool.

We have friends in Magnolia (Woodlands area) who own a brewery there.

I am now in NE houston but I think we might be moving back to Jersey Village the end of summer next year.

I didn't realize there were so many houston mama's here. maybe we should meet up for the December zoo lights sometime. We like to go on the weekday nights because it isn't crowded.

Okay. Two real questions. Because I asked this on another board and got a lot of these responses

In regards to the heat : Is it really THAT much worse than 100+ inches of snow and -10 windchills?? Like. We can't really enjoy the outdoors 6 months of the year and have to shovel and de-Ice our driveways AND watch for crappy road conditions all winter (December thru may).

I've heard that traffic and commutes are terrible. I get traffic. It's a major city. People are warning me that living in the suburbs would mean a 30-40 minute commute. Weve always had a 30-90 minute commute no matter where we've lived , so this doesn't seem like too big a deal to me. But it's been brought up so often that I feel like I'm missing some key component.

I have 2 friends in the Spring area and they love it! Anywhere you go is a long commute. I live in Dallas in the city limits and it takes me an hour to get to the other side of Dallas where every thing i happen to need is located LOL. Houston is much worse.

Our first electric bill was $348. Our first water bill was 158. But that is set up and account fees also. Watering your foundation is a must down here. Your foundation will crack and cost several thousands to fix. I will take a little higher water bill to avoid that from happening. But gas right next to my house is 1.79.

As far as weather I am not sure about Houston so bear with me. Here in Dallas snow is rare but ice is common. And if you can handle heat then you will be fine. But there is months were you wont want to even open the door.
