Default How's Obamacare working for you this year?

We dropped our obamacare. DH and I will go without, and we are going to sign up the boys for kidcare. But we were going to be paying almost $400 for the four of us, with a pretty high deductible, and the kicker was that there was an additional $2000 pharmacy deductible. They won't even cover generic prescriptions. Prices are just ridiculous, unless you are low enough income that you get a lot of help. My mom, for example, was able to get my same plan but with lower deductibles because she is retired.

I have a question about this. We've been able to get Badgercare (Medicaid) so we haven't had to worry about this. But, if dh gets another raise, we most likely won't qualify for Badgercare anymore. Is it true that we can only sign up for this health insurance in January? If so, that means we are out of luck for the rest of the year if we get cut from Badgercare sometime after January? This really scares me. I am on 5 meds. Not only do I need insurance to help pay for my meds, but I can't even get my scripts renewed unless I go to the doctor to get checked every three months. I can't imagine being without insurance.

No, if you lose coverage you get to apply whenever.

Just watch out--- there will be penalties at tax time if you don't have coverage.

This depends on your income.

For a lot of people, the fine will be a lot cheaper than getting insurance.

yes, it does depend on your income.
There are exceptions too... so you may not have a penalty at all. And there are a long list of exceptions.

It always seems to be middle America that gets the ~POOP~ty deal.

We are still without. 1% of my income in penalties is far less than $2300/mo plus the deductibles.

We are actually covered right now and I've been getting 2-3 ominous emails a day from the healthcare hub warning time was running out and of all the penalties we will face if we don't "sign up now". It's ridiculous!! I guess when I went and got our quotes before, they got my email and now I can't escape! Shouldn't they (whoever they are) know that we are indeed already covered?! How do they decide who is telling the truth on their taxes with self reporting, otherwise? So aggravating!

And on the same vein, did anyone else see the (temporary) surcharge Buffalo Wild Wings was adding to customer checks to cover employee healthcare? People balked and it was taken off, but do folks not realize it's just going to show up somewhere else? I am all for healthcare reformation and more universal coverage, but this isn't it. All they've done is make a broken system more complicated and EXPENSIVE!

Before my DH switched jobs, we had coverage that went from 'meh' to incredibly ~POOP~ty. Our payment not only doubled, but our coverage was almost halved. We had a $2500k deductible per person with a family cap of $7500k. We never use out insurance, so not only did we end up losing more each paycheck, we also paid more out of pocket.
DH switched jobs and our insurance is cheaper and deductible free, so yay. It's also a smaller company that cares about it's employees in addition to it's bottom line

We don't have anything (save Medicaid for the kids), but we're too poor to trigger penalties. I actually did my taxes yesterday and went through the little health care finder thing on the Turbo Tax site and they reaffirmed we don't make enough for any subsidies and to cover all of us would be $845/mo with God knows what sort of deductible. And, well, even if we [i]did[i] trigger that 1% penalty, it'd still be cheaper than paying for even one month of insurance.

So, it's been a nonissue for us. But I do have a friend who qualifies for subsidies and so had to get insurance...and it's like $100/mo but the insurance is set up as such that they have to pay for office visits OOP until the deductible is met, which they can't afford to do, so they're paying for useless insurance but it's OK because politicians can count them as newly insured.

Well, my state didn't expand Medicaid... I make too little to qualify for a subsidy and too much for Medicaid. My income isn't high enough for a penalty, either, so it hasn't affected me at all.

That being said, my boyfriend is diabetic and he couldn't get insurance at all before. He had some hospital coverage, but that's it. He paid quite a bit for it, too. Now he pays a little more, but he has actual insurance. The first time he went to the pharmacy to pick up his meds, he was shocked at how much cheaper it was. There were times before that he had to go without his insulin because it's so expensive. He wasn't being properly monitored by a doctor because he couldn't afford it. So, for him, it's been a huge blessing.

This year people are able to self-attest to insurance. Next year you need proof, and the penalties go up.

$2300/ month? That is ridiculous.
