Default When does your kid learn to type?

I put this question in Homeschooling since I do, but I'd love to hear any thoughts on this! My oldest is 7/first grade. He's at probably a fifth grade reading level. Anyway, there are some online things I want him to get to do (Duolingo, mainly), but he really ought to know how to type well for it. When is a good time to teach a kid to type properly? I don't really remember how old I was when I learned more or less proper form for typing, but I do know I took a hardcore class in 7th grade that made me a really good typist. But I did have decent form prior to that. Do they even still teach typing in school?!
~~~~~~~
Wow, I hit post before I proofread it. sorry if it seems disjointed or weird.
They use tech all the time in school. Laptops and passion the classroom things get a lot of use. I haven't asked if he is learning proper typing. But I remember taking it in 4-5 grade.
Can't hurt to try at least learning key order so it's not a total hint and peck game.
I type on my Kindle so use mainly my thumbs but can do it quickly because I know where the letters are.
Passion= ipads
Hint= hunt
Hmm, maybe Just should have proof read first
We took home tow typing in jr high, but were exposed to it a bit earlier. Maybe 5th grade?
Actually, I think the technique is called touch typing, where you can type without looking?
Handwriting Without Tears has a keyboarding program you can do called Keyboarding Without Tears that you can start at a younger age and progress them as their ability improves. It's online and I have it for the boys (also 7) I just have not started it with them yet, for no good reason really, lol.
My second graders are learning qwerty keyboard skills. They still hunt and peck, but they are learning where the letters are.
We use keyboarding without tears but the boys don't like to actually type with it yet. They prefer to do it on the iPad.
We just bought a laptop after being a tablet only household for three years and a contributing factor was teaching Roland how to type. He is 6.5 and first grade. We just started homeschool so I will wait until next year to start, but I wanted him to be familiar with the idea of how a keyboard looks.
My kids learned along with writing in school. By second grade they were doing homework and papers on it. I do not recall them ever learning the process, but remember the computers even in kindergarten. I am amazed though that my sophomore in high school actually learned handwriting in third grade because my younger two were never taught it. In fact, none of my kids ever use anything in school except printing and typing.
