Well, crap. I thought I was doing something right buying cage free, organic eggs from the store.

Cage free means they have access to a small square of land with an open door. It isn't happy chickens on a happy farm with kids and farmers handling them and loving them everyday...

That makes sense. Thank you.

Now to find a local farm. I have no idea where to start.

Eatlocal.org

Cage free, organic fed is probably the best you are going to get at a store.
Humanely raised is a little better, but not much.

The absolute best way to know that the food you are eating was fed a proper diet and treated humanely is to buy local and know your farmer. Farmer's markets are a great way to start.

There are a few in my area, thankfully. Like I said, there were 2 small farms I bought ours from and there is another where I tend to buy my chicken in bulk, too. Truly free range, on farms, well cared for.

The place where my "organic" Eggland's Best were coming from would make you sad!

Yeah, unfortunately this is what "cage free" typically looks like.
And often times, their beaks are also sheared off (with no anesthetic) to prevent them from killing each other in such tight quarters.

DH likes to have scrambled eggs once in a blue moon and I get them at one of the farmer's markets here.

Start at your farmers markets. Check Facebook, they often have a facebook page and you can ask on there which vendors have eggs, if it isn't farmers market season where you are yet.
