Default Any experience with Kumon, Sylvan on Huntington for algebra help?

My 8th grader is failing algebra and I am no math whiz. I am considering getting professional help.

Any experiences, good or bad?

My nephew went to a Sylvan center and (according to my SIL) it REALLY helped it. They really liked the program.

I am not excited about the pricey part. But, I need to see if I can swing it. I don't want him to continue to fall more and more behind. And I really don't have the time to go back and forth with the school to get him extra help there. I would think that when a kid gets As and Bs in everything else, and is failing math they might realize he is not getting it and try to help. But, the math teacher simply told me he needs to work hard and he can pass the class.

I know my cousin went to Sylvan for math and it really helped.

Just a suggestion, have you seen if there are any other math teachers that can help tutor him? My mom is a math teacher and just finished up tutoring a student to help her catch up. Maybe the high school has teachers that could tutor for a lower rate than a center? Or do you have a university near by, maybe some education majors could do that too?

I tutored a girl who went to Sylvan. Over a year and not much help for her.

If I were you I'd check out what's available for homeschoolers in this area. We use www.mathusee.com and I loan out the videos for people that are having problems. Each dvd is topic specific (one for multiplication, one for pre-algebra, one for algebra..) and then is broken down into 30 small lessons. I can just click on the lesson for the problem, watch, and be ready to go.

There's also Teaching Textbooks (which I believe come with a disc for the computer) and The Life Of Fred (story-like math book with real life solutions).
